In 2006, the New Zealand rugby union side changed their pre match Haka from the Ka Mate Haka they had used for half a century to the Kapa O Pango Haka. It featured a throat slicing gesture that caused much upset within the rugby world.

The side was banned from performing it during their 2006 tour of France. It was then suspended for the home series against Ireland. Despite 60% of New Zealander's saying they supported the use of the Kapa O Pango Haka it was only performed once more, before a Tri Nation's match against Australia.
