Undisputedly one of motor racing's all-time greats, the Brazilian winner of three world championships died following a fatal crash at the Imola race track. Senna came off the course and hit an unprotected concrete wall.

The crash and its aftermath was captured on camera with television pictures around the world showing paramedics attempting to give first aid the lifeless Senna.
