Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding were rivals in the ultra competitive world of figure skating. During the 1994 US National championships Kerrigan was attacked following a practice session and suffered knee injuries.

It would transpire that Harding's ex-husband hired Shane Stant to attack Kerrigan in order to prevent her from competing at the 1994 Winter Olympics. However Kerrigan recovered to perform and won the silver medal.
