Millwall have a long and notorious history of football hooliganism. Their firm, known as 'The Bushwackers', have been described by police as "the most dangerous in the country". After a play-off game against Birmingham City in May 2002, Millwall fans started a riot which was described as one of the worst cases of civil disorder seen in Great Britain in the recent past.
47 policemen and 24 police horses were injured, and the Met considered suing the club after the events.
