La Sabeneta has earned its notorious reputation by playing host to some of the most heinous bouts of prison violence ever witnessed. In 1994, 108 inmates died in one day when a gun fight broke out. The guards were not involved.

In 1995 things were no better with 624 prisoners injured and 196 murdered over the course of the year. And with only one guard to every 150 inmates life is unlikely to get better in this Venezuelan hellhole.
