Many think of France as the UK's civilised neighbour but if La Sante prison is anything to go by their penal system harps back to the middle ages and would make even the Foreign Legion wince.

Prisoners are kept in inhumane conditions and often commit suicide to escape the squalor. In 1999 alone 124 inmates took their own lives by various means including eating rat poison.
