The heath around The Green Man was a popular spot for duelling, many a score settled and honour restored here.

A dangerous place and haunt of highwaymen, the notorious Jerry Abershaw drank here before he was caught and hanged from a gibbet outside – the last highwayman to be displayed in such a fashion.
