Founded in the 1970s after the Munich massacre when eight Palestinian terrorists took nine Israeli athletes hostage and killed two others, the BBE were created out of the Dutch Marine Corps.

A year later they retook Scheveningen prison from armed Palestine terrorists, using only stun grenades and hand-to-hand combat.
