Founded in 1831 following the July Revolution, the Legion are unique in the French army as they are the only unit that allows foreigners to join. Primarily used to protect French colonies the unit nevertheless took part in both World Wars.
While the Legion are renowned for their harsh training and aggressive tactics they live by a strong code of honour which must be memorised and recited regularly.
