Known as: An actor
Then: Chef and philanthropist
Paul Newman's career as an actor never flagged since he hit the big time in the 1950s with 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof' opposite Elizabeth Taylor. He was nominated for an Academy Award 10 times but for Newman that wasn't enough. He needed to give a little back, so he founded Newman's Own – a hugely successful line of food products in his name.
The brand started as homemade salad dressings that he gave out to friends and family but they proved so popular that he set up his own business but on the condition that all profits go to charity. The tagline was "Shameless Exploitation in Pursuit of the Common Good". Since 1982, Newman's food and drink products have raised over $260million for good causes.
