'1984' (1984)
What's it about? George Orwell's classic novel of a totalitarian future society sees a man, Winston Smith (John Hurt), whose daily work is rewriting history trying to rebel against the state by falling in love.
Why's it better? Eerily released in 1984, Michael Radford's version perfectly encapsulates Orwell's grim outlook and also showcases Richard Burton's final film appearance. Hurt is painfully thin and realistically ravaged unlike Edmond O'Brien in the tame 1956 version. Also be sure to check out Terry Gilliam's 'Brazil' for a fresh perspective.
