What's it about? As Earth is invaded by alien tripods reaping our planet for its resources, one family (fronted by Tom Cruise) struggles to survive the global onslaught.

Why's it better? Steven Spielberg's version of HG Wells' novel may fall apart at the end but the opening act is pure breakneck tension, thanks to its spectacular effects and dark undertones that make the original look tame and dated. A true cinema experience, similar yet far superior to the recently panned 'Day The Earth Stood Still' remake with Keanu Reeves.
