'Vanilla Sky' (2001)
What's it about? A wildly successful publisher (Tom Cruise) finds his life is taking a very surreal turn after he's involved in a car accident that disfigures his face and leaves his jaded lover dead. Later a psychologist (Kurt Russell) attempts to find out if he's a murderer, insane or something else.
Why's it better? Cruise's star power makes him completely believable as the arrogant man of success, while Cameron Crowe's colourful and imaginative direction surpasses the 1997 original 'Open Your Eyes', visually. 'Vanilla Sky' also makes the audience work harder to unravel the jigsaw, all set to one of Crowe's typically outstanding soundtracks. Foreign film fans should still seek out the original.
