Brush your teeth
The number of extractions has soared by 30% in four years, according to new government figures. But many of these could've easily been prevented by following the basics of home dentistry.
You should brush at least twice a day - once after breakfast and once before bed. The suggested brushing time is three minutes each time, which is longer than most people do. If your water isn't fluoridated spit out the toothpaste when you're done but don't rinse your mouth out - instead keep the film of the toothpaste on your teeth. Fluoride toothpaste is recommended.
Remember to brush in circles paying particular attention to where the teeth meet the gums, but not too hard. Toothbrushes should also be changed every three months.
