2. Field-Marshal the Viscount Montgomery
Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, was the best-known British general in WW2. He became a national hero following the crucial Battle of El Alamein in North Africa in 1942.
His leadership resulted in the Allies' first major land victory. Affectionately known as 'Monty', he was a prominent commander in Italy and North West Europe, where he was in command of all Allied ground forces during Operation Overlord until after the Battle of Normandy.
