Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener is the man whose influence extended British drafting hopefuls during WW1 thanks to his image on the famous 1914 recruitment poster.
After a long and distinguished career which saw him take command in the Mahdist War (1884-1899), the Second Boer War (1900–1902) and act as
Commander-in-Chief in India (1902–1909), Kitchener went down with the HMS Hampshire, which sunk west of the Orkney Islands in 1916. He was 65.
