Sting was left devastated when he caught his mother having an affair with another man when he was just 12 - and kept the traumatic secret to himself for a further 30 years.
The singer was distraught at what he saw and eventually confessed the dreadful memory to best friend Jim Berryman in the late '90s.
In his book about life as Sting's best friend, Berryman wrote: "Eight years ago, around a roaring fire, he told me that his mother had had an affair.
"He'd never been able to tell anyone. When he was 12 or 13, he saw her kissing someone. It was very traumatic for him."
Earlier this year, Sting was left red-faced after he was spotted pacing the Hollywood Walk of Fame looking for his star.
The former Police frontman said he tried to discreetly find his golden accolade while strolling along the Hollywood Boulevard with a friend.
However, after minutes of fruitless searching, an amused fan pointed him in the right direction.
The legendary musician told US TV host Jimmy Kimmel: "I walked very, very quietly, discreetly down the street and I couldn't see it. I walked back a little way and some guy said, 'Sting, your star's over there.' He knew exactly what I was doing."
