Researchers have found a 430,000-yaer-old human skull showing evidence of lethal wounds from an underground cave system. Archaeologists believe that this could very well be the first murder in human history.
Piecing together 52 fragments of a near-complete skull, the archaeologists discovered two holes above the left eye that caused by two separate impacts from the same objects following slightly different trajectories.
The skull was discovered together with at least 28 remains of individuals dating back around 430,000 years. The Cranium 17 murder victim may have been an early Neanderthal, or a more ancient human ancestor, Homo heidelbergensis.
Dr Nohemi Sala, who is leading the dig, said: “This skull shows two penetrating lesions on the frontal bone, above the left eye.”
