Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams were ordered to pay the Marvin Gaye estate $7.4million after jurors found that they copied a song to create Blurred Lines, the biggest hit song of 2013.
Based on the verdict, Gaye’s family will receive $4million in damages and $3.4million in profits from the song. Meanwhile, Pharrell has to shell out $1.6million while Thicke is forced to pay $1.7million. The duo together with rapper T.I. made $16m from the song.
Thicke and Pharrell, together with rapper T.I., who was previously cleared of infringement charges, released a statement that reads: 'While we respect the judicial process, we are extremely disappointed in the ruling made today, which sets a horrible precedent for music and creativity going forward.
'Blurred Lines’ was created from the heart and minds of Pharrell, Robin and T.I. and not taken from anyone or anywhere else. We are reviewing the decision, considering our options and you will hear more from us soon about this matter.'
Thicke has previously admitted that he did not write the song while Pharrell testified that he wrote it in about an hour in mid-2012 while high on painkillers and alcohol.
