UK’s latest Eurovision entry, which feature lyrics “Birds Eye Potato Waffles, they’re waffle versatile” which were originally used in a catchy commercial in the 1980s, has been ridiculed online.
David Mindel, who wrote the entry, Electro Velvet’s Still In Love With You, previously worked on advertising jingles.
However, a BBC source denied he was “responsible for the waffle ad and nor did he copy or be inspired by it”. The source insisted the “notes, melody and words in our song” were “completely different from the waffle ad”.
Meanwhile, some fans were clearly irritated and took to Twitter to air their disgust. One wrote: “UK appear to have entered the waffle advert for Eurovision. I hope they use the Um Bongo one next year.”
Electro Velvet signer Alex Larke and Bianca Nicholas, who shares vocals, defended the song. With the latter saying: “There’s a lot of ballads this year, so our song will stand out.”
