What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is a technique for promoting the body's own healing response by stimulating the nerve endings in the feet. Reflexology dates back to 5000 BC and was used by the Chinese and ancient Egyptians. The techniques used today, however, were developed by Dr William Fitzgerald at the beginning of the 20th century. He developed a theory of reflex zones that was added to in the 1930's by Eunice Ingram.
Injuries and illnesses can disrupt the energy flow in the body. Reflexology can be use to restore the bodies equilibrium, unblocking energy pathways. Many nerve endings are found in the feet. These nerve endings travel to the spinal cord and other parts of the body, including vital organs and glands.
How does it work
During a Reflexology treatment, gentle pressure is applied to these nerve endings (reflex points) in the feet, each of which corresponds to a particular part of the body. By stimulating these reflex points, the practitioner triggers physiological changes in the body promoting health, relaxation, circulation, lymphatic flow and energy movement in the nervous system and vital organs of the body.
As Reflexology treats the whole person and not just he symptoms of the disease, it can relieve a wide range of problems. These include both chronic and acute illnesses.
These are only a few examples of the wide range of health problems that Reflexology can treat. It is suitable for all ages and is a very relaxing technique to help maintain the general well-being of the body. Reflexology also works well as a preventative technique.
