After more than three years following the release of PlayStation 4, Sony is set to release the PS 4.5 Neo, a more powerful version of its predecessor that can run games in 4k and amp up the immersion for PlayStation VR experiences.
Reports confirm that the new console, which others say could be also named PlayStation 4K, provides gamers with another option if they’re looking for an enhanced gaming experience. It will offer more processing power and speed.
Sony executive Andrew House has already confirmed that the new console will exist alongside the common PS4 and that all games going forward will work across both versions.
PlayStation 4.5 Neo is expected to support 4K Ultra HD resolution for gaming and might help sell Sony’s 4K televisions.
The console’s enhanced capability is also geared towards supporting PlayStation VR headset, which is set to be released on October 16, 2016.
Based on a leaked document first acquired by Giant Bomb, PlayStation 4.5 will feature faster components, with its CPU utilising 8 Jaguar Cores running at 2.1 GHz each. It also features an upgraded AMD GPU that offers extra graphical muscle with 36 compute units at 911 MHz.
Meanwhile, the transfer speed would be up to 218 GB/sec, enabling the new console to handle higher-resolution output to provide an overall smoother play experience.
Sony is expected to release the new console early next year. However, the company has already required that all games released from October 2016 to support both console versions and that games shipping in late September must have a day-one patch to add in the functionality.
However, a Wall Street Journal report released in March suggested that Sony would announce PS4.5 in advance of the PlayStation VR’s release. Some experts say that this could happen at the Tokyo Game Show in September.
As for the price, rumours suggest that the price tag could be around £350.
