Samsung and LG, two of the best-known names in consumer electronics, are giving the fridge a digital makeover so it can finally join the ranks of “smart” products.
Samsung’s Family Hub refrigerators and LG’s Smart InstaView, expected to be released later this year, are designed to offer various conveniences and a few expensive frills. They allow owners to leave digital notes for family members, play music in the kitchen, check the content of the fridge with their phone and even order groceries with just a voice command.
Both Samsung’s and LG’s smart fridges will have amazing features including touch-screen displays, at least one camera inside, and Wi-Fi radios to connect to the internet. They will also be able to run apps and equipped with built-in artificial intelligence technology that will allow them to respond to voice commands and queries.
Samsung’s Family Hub 2.0 refrigerators will also have a voice-assistant technology allowing users to order groceries and check their calendar, among others. They will also be able to run apps that users can use to search for recipes or to send text messages to their fridge from a smartphone as well as listen to music or watch TV shows and videos on the screen.
