For the first time in its history EastEnders has not been nominated for a Bafta

The move has reportedly shocked TV insiders, after 14 million viewers watched Kat Slater and Alfie Moon wed. Additionally 15 million saw Janine Evans give her new husband Barry the heave-ho off a cliff.

Normally the "best continuing drama" category sees the BBC soap perform well, but this year Coronation Street, Holby City, Casualty, and The Bill filled the nomination slots, leaving no room for the Walford series.

A show insider told The Sun: "We know we had a great year - and that was backed up by all the people who watched."

The best continuing drama award has found its way to Albert Square on three occasions in the last five years.
