A new, revolutionary IVF technique has resulted in the birth of a healthy baby boy in the United States. Doctors used screen large tracts of the baby’s DNA for chromosomes defects that would have hindered the embryo from successfully implanting into his mother’s womb.
Abnormalities with the packages of DNA in the embryo are the reasons why foetus do not reach term or are not implanted into the womb.
Conner Levy was born in May after the revolutionary test helped doctors pick an embryo with the best chances of success.
Dr Dagan Wells from Oxford University told the BBC: "What our technique does is it gives you the number of chromosomes and other biological information about the embryo at a low cost - probably about two thirds of the price of existing methods of screening."
