Google doodle honours LS Lowry’s 125th birthday

Google homepage nodded at English artist Laurence Stephen Lowry on his 125th birthday

English artist Laurence Stephn Lowry, better known as LS Lowry, has been honoured by Google doodle to mark his 125th birthday. The painter, who lived in Pendlebury for more than 40 years, was famous for his depictions of tall, thin figures called “matchstick men” in industrial landscape settings of Northern England.

 

Google, which usually honours major contributors to science, industry, and art, featured a landscape in Lowry’s style on its homepage.  

 

Tate Britain is set to hold the first exhibition of LS Lowry’s work in a public institution that will feature the artist’s 80 works of art. The aim of the exhibition is thought to re-assess his influence on the world of art. 

 

Lowry, who was often criticized for his works’ naivety, relied mostly on a muted palette and simplified illustrative form.

 

Aside from being a great contributor to the arts, Lowry was also known -as reported by The Independent - to hold the record for the most Royal honours declined, including a knighthood.
