Indoor farming is not new – tomatoes, for example, have been grown in greenhouses for years, but the technology needs to be upscaled to benefit the increase in the human population.

Many stories high, or adapting a pyramid structure, vertical farms promise to be cheap to construct, safe to operate and be situated in the heart of the world's biggest population zones to make cities self sufficient.
