We've all heard the rhyme: "Beans, beans are good for your heart, the more you eat, the more you ***", but there is actually some truth to the silly song.
It's a secret stash of fibre, calcium and iron. High in protein and low in GI-carbohydrates, beans are great for releasing energy slowly and leaving you feeling fuller for longer.
What's more, beans (80g) count as one portion of the recommended five-a-day, containing a fifth of a woman's RDA of fibre, one tenth of her protein and around one quarter of her iron.
The insoluble fibre promotes fatty acids to protect the colon from cancer while the powerful antioxidants of the tomato sauce's lycopene reduce heart disease and look after the prostate.
