In October 1978, Allen was arrested on a felony drug charge when authorities caught him carrying 1.4 pounds of cocaine. Due to the amount of the class A drug he was carrying, he faced the possibility of life in prison.

He ended up serving only 28 months in the Sandstone Federal Correctional Institution after he pleaded no contest to the charge and testified against his drug partner.
