There are many real examples of sexism which merit action, and then there are more ridiculous measures put in place. The European Parliament was one such organisation who adopted a non-gender specific policy.
Rules were introduced in March 2009 to outlaw titles stating marital status such as 'Miss' and 'Mrs' so as not to cause offence. It also meant that 'Madame' and 'Mademoiselle', 'Frau' and 'Fraulein' and 'Senora' and 'Senorita' were banned.
Terms such as 'sportsmen' and 'statesman' were also cast out, as were 'firemen', 'headmasters' and headmistresses', 'laymen' and 'manageress' or 'mayoress'.
