It's nail biting stuff
Back in 1942 Lawrence LeShan stood (for reasons best known to himself) in the darkness of a cabin where a group of young boys laid sleeping. He noticed that many of them bit their nails in their sleep.
He tried to cure them by uttering the phrase "my fingernails taste terribly bitter" over and over, in person, as they slept. By the end of the summer 40% had quit their nocturnal habit.
