'Vanity Fair' (2004)
Centring around Becky Sharpe, the orphaned daughter of a French dancer and struggling artist, we follow this attractive, bright and witty young woman as she sets her sights on crossing the class divide in early 19th century England.
William Makepeace Thackeray's novel from 1847 - 1848 has been adapted many times but this version made substantial changes - including a happy ending. In this case being cut into a film from the book leaves the plot muddled from too many characters and too little explanation.
