'Sense and Sensibility' (1995)
Another Jane Austen adaptation, where wealthy Mr Dashwood dies leaving his second wife and her two daughters without a penny by the rules of inheritance. The women then have to find a way to make ends meet down a road filled with daunting problems and romance.
Aided by great acting (Kate Winslet has to be credited here) this adaptation stands above other costume dramas. The film manages to stay true to the author's themes - such as the link with romanticism and materialism - and to her ironic wit. To top it off it won a Golden Globe for Best Picture.
