Sven-Goran Eriksson's reign over England came to an end when England fell out of the World Cup to Portugal in the quarter-finals. Wayne Rooney was sent off in the same match for stamping on Ricardo Carvalho which left England a man down. Eventual winners Italy beat France to take the trophy.
