Fritz LangÂ’s masterpiece is, for many, the ultimate sci-fi movie. Oozing with German expressionist style, the action takes place in a futuristic urban dystopia that fiercely divides the workers and thinkers. Both need each other to survive but this division could come crashing down when the son of a city bigwig falls in love with a working class prophet.
In addition to adding a fresh twist on the bourgeoisie/proletariat partition, ‘Metropolis’ was also one of cinema’s most revered lost greats – after its 1927 premiere, only a savagely edited version existed. It eventually underwent an extensive reconstruction in 2002.
