Robbie Jackson will return to EastEnders as former star Dean Gaffney is set to make a brief appearance a year after he was sacked.

Gaffney, whose character in the soap opera is a street cleaner, will come back to see Jackson's sister Sonia wed Martin Fowler.

The actor was fired from his 120,000-a-year role in March 2003 after an argument with executive producer Louise Berridge.

"He is very excited," a show insider told The Sun newspaper. "He starts filming in a few weeks and will be part of a big storyline."

According to the paper, Gaffney's return will only last for a couple of episodes.

Martin and Sonia's wedding will be one of the major storylines of the summer in EastEnders.

Since leaving the BBC programme, Gaffney has appeared on ITV1 flop "The Club" and had a small part in axed soap "Crossroads".
