Based on research conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), Singapore remains the world’s most expensive city for 2015. The other four that completed the top five remained unchanged as well. These include Paris, Oslo, Zurich, and Sydney.
EIU surveyed 133 cities worldwide using New York as a base in comparing the cost of utility bills, clothing, and food.
When it comes to groceries, Singapore is 11per cent more expensive than New York and up to 50per cent higher when it comes to clothing.
EIU said: "Most significantly, Singapore's complex Certificate of Entitlement system makes car prices excessive, with Singaporean transport costs almost three times higher than in New York."
The information was gathered to help expatriates make a well-informed decision in choosing where to stay should they choose to relocate. The information is also useful for business travellers.
Meanwhile, some of the least expensive cities in the world can be found in India, with Bangalore, Mumbai, and Chennai included in the five cheapest. Other cities that made it to the list include Caracas in Venezuela.
