Artist, Hugo top Oscars

Both films triumph at this year's Academy Awards...

Silent film The Artist and Martin Scorsese's Hugo have triumphed at this year's Oscars, winning five awards each on the night.

The Artist came away with Best Picture and Best Actor for its star, Jean Dujardin, as well as Best Director, Best Costume and Best Original Score.

Director Michel Hazanavicius thanked American filmmaker Billy Wilder in his Best Picture acceptance speech and also told his wife, Artist star Berenice Bejo, that she was the inspiration for the film:

"I want to say to my wife, Berenice Bejo, that I love you, but it's not just about that... you inspired the movie, and you're the soul of the movie and the positive feeling of the movie."

Hugo dominated most of the technical categories at the Awards, which were held on 26 February, coming away with Best Art Direction, Best Visual Effects, Best Cinematography, Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing.

Meryl Streep won her third Academy Award, taking home the Best Actress gong, while The Help's Octavia Spencer was awarded the Best Supporting Actress Oscar.

Eighty-two-year-old Christopher Plummer became the oldest ever Oscar winner, collecting the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in Beginners.

Elsewhere, Rango bagged Best Animation and Best Original Song went to Flight of the Conchords star Bret Mackenzie, for his song Man or Muppet from The Muppets soundtrack.

The 84th Academy Awards were hosted by Billy Crystal and were held at the Hollywood and Highland Theatre.
