Coupe Du Monde Boulangerie – the baking world cup in plain English – was dominated by South Korean bakers.
The world’s premiere baking competition was held last week in Paris – the capital of the baguette-eating world. Although many hoped that the French would stay ahead of the pack, it was the Korean who came up with the best, fresh crusty baguette.
It must have been hard to swallow, as it has only been two years since a Korean chain of cafes set up shop in Paris. The Korean company plays on the French theme using Breton-style stripy tops and an Eiffel tower logo.
South Korea went from an agricultural to a prosperous industrial economy about 50 years ago. As their income rises, South Korean tastes are also changing. Based on study, their wheat consumption per head has risen by the year while rice consumption fell.
Also, the study found that more men are now into cooking. In fact, the three bakers who won in Paris are men and cooking programmes in South Korea are also dominated mostly by men.
