For centuries, mystics have looked at the hands of people to determine their future; experienced palm readers not only claim to be able tell you about your past and present, but they can also tell you about your future.
Researchers, however, have now found out that there may be a scientific reason towards this after they conducted experiments over many decades.
They found that there is actually a whole host of traits related to the length ratio of a personÂ’s ring and index finger.
During the experiments, scientists found that the right hand in particular can have a definitive explanation of a manÂ’s sexuality, aggression and any diseases he may incur.
The most recent research found that men whose index fingers are longer than their ring fingers are significantly less likely to develop prostate cancer, according to the Institute Of Cancer Research.
How to measure
To work out your digit ratio is not simply a matter of guessing – there is a scientific way of doing it.
First, you must straighten your fingers and then look at the palm of your hand. Start from the base of your index and ring fingers where there are creases – you will notice that your index finger has one crease whilst your ring finger has many.
Select the crease closest to the palm, choosing a point on the crease midway across the base of the finger. Mark this with a pen.
Then, measure from the mark to the tip of your finger. Do the same for each finger, noting the ratio between each.
Differences explained
A longer index finger suggests a lower risk of early heart disease, or for women could mean a higher risk of breast cancer. Longer index fingers are considered more of a feminine trait.
Researchers also found that people with longer index fingers could be more prone to schizophrenia, allergies, eczema and hay fever, whilst little boys appeared to be clingier, more anxious but better behaved.
Creativity is higher in those with longer ring fingers, whilst male fertility is said to be much stronger. A bigger ring finger is also a more masculine trait.
Conclusions
Some scientists believe that the ratio of finger sizes may actually be down to hormones, rather than specific personality traits.
Studies show that those with the masculine bigger ring finger actually have more testosterone in them.
Most are keen to stress, however, that these traits are not set in stone and that different environmental factors should be taken into consideration.
