The world’s richest horserace gets underway on Saturday, March 30th when the Dubai World Cup gets underway at 4:30pm. The amazing filed includes 13 entries including last year’s winner, a Kentucky Derby winner, and a filly that has won the Eclipse Award twice.

They will battle for £6,609,000 in prize money. American trained horses have won eight of the twelve races since its inception. Animal Kingdom, the Kentucky Derby winner in 2011 will try to be the first American-based horse to claim victory since 2010. The early favorite is Hunter’s Delight, owned by Sheik Mohammed.

The Dubai World Cup was created in 1996 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai. He is also the owner of one of the world’s most renowned thoroughbred breeding and racing operations. The race takes place each year and is sponsored by the EHRA (Emirates Horse Racing Authority. The race was first televised in the United States in 2006.

Jockey Jerry Bailey is the most prolific rider having won the race five times. There has never been a horse that has won at the Dubai World Cup more than once. Godolphin Racing has the most wins as an owner with five fins.

Trainer Saeed bin Suroor has the most wins as a trainer with five as well. This year’s race is expected to be an exciting event as always and odds makers are already picking who they think will be the winner.

Historically, four year old horses have done best in the race, with five and six year olds coming on strong in the past few years. Three year olds have not fared well at all. Because the race is run on a dirt track, it tends to favor the American horses because they are used to training on dirt tracks.
