VOIP - What Is It?

VOIP is a technology that converts analog voice signals into a digital format allowing us to make a telephone call using data-driven devices. It makes the transmission of voice over the Internet possible and at the same time, for phone services to be delivered over the Internet.

 

Also called Internet telephony and broadband telephony, VOIP has the capacity to replace the traditional phone system in its entirety.

 

Traditional phone systems, which have been in use for more than a hundreds of years, use circuit-switching method to transmit analog voice signals. When using the VoIP technology, phone signals that are converted over computer networks use packet-switching protocols. It allows high volumes of data to be carried over the Internet enhancing communications over the network.

 

VoIP is being used by many companies for long distance calls that are routed through IP gateways as packets, which helps reduce the bandwidth demand. Due to its efficiency, it is predicted that VoIP would eventually replace traditional telephone lines using packet switching networks and related hardware. When compared to using traditional line, VoIP offers a more flexible and more cost-efficient option.
