Hundreds of families have been forced to sleep in school after an unexploded World War II bomb was discovered at an east London building site.
Police, firefighters, and Army bomb disposal experts were called following reports that builders in a basement in Temple Street at the junction with Old Bethnal Green Road discovered the explosives. Tower Hamlets Council said that it expects the army disposal experts to work through the night to defuse the bomb.
A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: "We can confirm that a specialist military bomb disposal team from 11 EOD Regiment, Royal Logistics Corps are on site in Bethnal Green and are assisting the police with the ongoing incident involving a WWII German aircraft bomb that was discovered earlier today."
Several roads were closed and the police advised motorists to avoid Old Bethnal Green Road, Warner Place, Squarres Street, Bethnal Green Road, Cambridge Heath Road, and Hackney Road.
