'X Factor' hopefuls The Unconventionals' dreams were shattered on Saturday night (14.10.06) after they were kicked off the show.

The six-piece group were furious at being dumped in favour of 26-year-old Dionne Mitchell who they came up against as the two acts with the least votes from viewers.

Judge Simon Cowell - who had the deciding vote after Louis Walsh and Sharon Osbourne each backed their own acts to stay in the competition - branded the band "diabolical" before chosing Dionne to stay.

The Unconventionals' lead singer, 41-year-old Drew Jaymson, blamed producers for their early exit from the show, after they were forced to sing Motown classic 'Dancing In The Street' to a backing track, instead of their usual a cappella style.

He said: "You put your trust in people in the business who are supposed to make the right choices but this didn't work for us. If we'd sung a cappella like people are used to hearing us we may still be in it."

Bandmate Liz Ewing, 37, hit out at other contestants who revealed their life's trials and tribulations in the background footage shown on the show.

She claimed the group had less airtime on the show detailing their own life stories.

Liz said: "We're out because we didn't rely on our tragedies. We've got some, believe me."

The band's mentor Louis Walsh was also raging that the band had been given the boot by Simon.

He fumed: "I couldn't believe what he did. He was being so smug.

"Losing these guys so early on is just plain wrong."
