Canonical, the London-based developer behind Ubuntu Edge smartphone, had generated about £6.6m in pledges.
However, with only six days left of its crowdfunding campaign, the company is still short in funding to reach its goal of $32million (£20.4million). The company will be forced to return the money it has raised so far if it fails to raise the amount it needs.
Canonical CEO Jane Silber said of the record, as referred to in one report by The Telegraph: “When we started this campaign three weeks ago, we hoped it would resonate with our community.
“So, to break the world record for a crowdfunding campaign is absolutely mind-blowing. We felt that innovation had substantially slowed down in the mobile industry, so wanted to address this.
“We’re still astonished by the generosity of our community and will continue to do all we can to make the Ubuntu Edge a reality.”
