The names of the two Britons who tragically lost their lives during a hiking trip to the French Alps have been confirmed. The father, Peter Saunders, aged 48, and his 12-year-old son Charlie, both died after supposedly falling from a mountainous trail on Saturday.
The two, who were believed to have been hiking in the Mont Blanc region, were embarking on their trip when apparently the youngster fell from the path they were on. It is understood that his father made a phone call asking for help before tragically falling to his death.
Their bodies were recovered by rescue teams on Sunday morning following a search mission. It is thought they were walking close to the Bossons glacier area.
Their family has said in a statement: “Peter and Charlie Saunders had flown to the French Alps for a short weekend of adventure in the Chamonix Valley. They were to have a half day walking followed by a full day skiing.”
Adding: “Charlie was always full of life, had a really happy temperament and loved spending time with his father. Peter was fantastic at making things happen, resourceful, with a positive approach to life. They will both be sorely missed by friends and family alike."
The family also thanked the rescue service for their help.
According to media reports, it seems some view the trail as being dangerous during winter.
Mont Blanc is regarded as being the highest peak in Europe. Places that surround the mountain are Courmayeur, in Italy, Saint-Gervais-les Bains and Chamonix in France.
