The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has released the names of the two soldiers who were gunned down and killed by a man wearing Afghanistan police uniform. The incident happened in the Helmand Province region on Tuesday.
Lieutenant Edward Drummond-Baxter, aged 29, and Lance Corporal Siddhanta Kunwar, 28-years-old, were on duty as part of the 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles, who are based in Kent. The regiment are linked to 40 Commando Royal Marines.
The two heroes were supposedly killed on patrol in the Nahr-e Saraj region when they were near a checkpoint named Prrang. Based on reports, this occurred following a meeting they had had with Afghanistan police.
It is believed that Lt Baxter had recently joined troops in Afganistan on his first tour in the country, whereas L/Cpl Kunwar had served for his regiment twice before, with both of his tours being in Afghanistan.
It is understood that L/Cpl Kunwar is from Nepal and he joined the Army in 2005.
