Some of Corrie's top stars could be wiped out when a tram crashes right through the Rovers Return.
The possible plotline would leave Weatherfield wiped out when the tram plunges from a viaduct into the pub at the heart of the Street.
It was discussed in top secret talks among Corrie bosses as one of a number of ratings-boosting stories that could repeat the success of this week's Mad Maya rampage, which saw a string of shops belonging to Dev Alahan firebombed.
The tram trauma is thought to be one of the favourites being considered by producer Tony Wood and the show's top writers. It would fit in with nanny Claire Casey's new job as a tram driver with Manchester's real life service Metrolink in the new year.
"The tram crash into the Rovers is high on the list," a Corrie insider told the Daily Star.
"It would also be the perfect opportunity to kill off any characters who either don't want to renew their contracts or who have run their course."
The idea is not a new one - in 1967, battleaxe Ena Sharples was left fighting for her life after being trapped in the wreckage of a train crash.
And in 1989 Alan Bradley died under the wheels of a Blackpool tram while trying to catch Rita Fairclough.
