Thick fog disrupts Heathrow and London City flights

Cancelled flights and disruptions to flight schedules are a result of heavy fog for parts of the UK on Wednesday

Heathrow Airport and London City Airport have had to cancel and delay many of their flights as a result of the heavy fog that has settled over parts of the UK. There have been disruptions to inbound and outbound schedules because of the recent weather.

 

On its website, Heathrow Airport said early on Wednesday morning that approximately there were 60 flight cancellations which were having a knock-on effect on flight schedules for the day.

 

At London City Airport a report by the BBC stated 20 flights were cancelled, whereas The Telegraph reports that there were 6 early morning flights.

 

A London airport spokesman said previously: “It's better to cancel flights when there's fog because you can't land as many planes per hour because you have to leave more space between the planes.”

 

With regards to cancelled flights, overseas destinations were affected and this is thought to include Germany, as well as there being disruptions to domestic flights, such as routes linked to Newcastle and Jersey.

 

Air passengers were being advised to make sure they contacted the airlines they intended to fly with before travelling.

 

It is expected that the flight disruptions could last beyond the fog clearing – which is hoped could happen by midday on Wednesday, in particular for the area of London surrounding Heathrow Airport.

 

Although, thick fog is expected to affect parts of the country for the most of the day. A fog warning has been issued by the Met Office which relates to certain areas in England. People are being warned of poor visibility levels as well as freezing fog.

 

There are also concerns for the safety of the countries drivers as a result of the fog, as it can cause dangerous conditions for those travelling on the roads.
