"Vanilla Sky" actress Tilda Swinton has won the role of the White Witch in the upcoming film version of "the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe".
The film is set to start shooting in New Zealand's capital Wellington next month. The studios used to create most of the special effects for "Lord Of The Rings" will be put to work on this latest fantasy adaptation.
Nicole Kidman was linked to the part, however rumours that Swinton, 43, had landed the part circulated a few days ago. Studio bosses confirmed them today.
For those unfamiliar with CS Lewis' classic children's novel, the White Witch is the evil overlord of the land of Narnia. A place of talking animals and ancient magic, a prophecy foretells she will be toppled by four "sons of Adam and daughters of Eve".
After a century in control of the land - where it is always winter, but never Christmas - our child heroes stumble through a portal in an old wardrobe and proceed to bring about the witch's downfall.
The new film adaptation is backed by Disney's money, and helmed by "Shrek" director Andrew Adamson.
